Our bodies are incredibly complex systems, and nowhere is this more evident than in the intricate dance of hormones that govern our menstrual cycles. Yet, despite the wealth of information encoded in our monthly flow, many women remain unaware of how to interpret the signs our bodies give us. Understanding your body's signals is an important part of a woman's health journey.
Society often normalizes discomfort and pain during menstruation, but what if these symptoms were actually signals of imbalance?
As a reflexologist, I've had numerous clients come to me with questions about their menstrual health. Here are some of the common queries and misconceptions surrounding this vital aspect of women's well-being.
1. How Long Should My Cycle Be?
The ideal length of a menstrual cycle falls between 25 to 35 days. However, what matters more than the exact duration is consistency. Your cycle should follow a predictable pattern month after month. Irregularities could signify underlying issues that merit attention.
2. What Color Should the Blood Be?
Contrary to what many believe, the colour of menstrual blood holds significance beyond mere aesthetics. Bright red blood indicates healthy blood flow to the pelvic region. It's a reassuring sign that your body is functioning optimally in this aspect.
3. Is PMS Normal?
PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome) has long been accepted as an unavoidable part of the menstrual cycle. However, it's essential to challenge this notion. Symptoms like bloating, pain, swelling, and acne are not inevitable. Instead, they often signal imbalances in hormones such as progesterone, testosterone, estrogen, and cortisol.
Progesterone, for instance, can heighten a woman's sensitivity to blood sugar fluctuations during the latter half of her cycle. Interestingly, the symptoms of blood sugar imbalance mirror those of PMS. By maintaining stable blood sugar levels through a balanced diet comprising protein, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fats, you can mitigate these symptoms effectively.
4. Is Breakthrough Bleeding Normal?
Breakthrough bleeding—bleeding outside of the menstrual period—is not typical. It could indicate various underlying issues, including low progesterone, anovulation (lack of ovulation), or estrogen dominance. However, there's an exception to this rule: ovulation bleeding, which some women experience for a day or two around the midpoint of their cycle.
Oh, that's just part of being a woman!!
Does this phrase sound familiar almost from the moment we have our first menstruation we are told this. Pain and anxiety is just part of being a woman and we should learn to put up with it silently even if we are flooding monthly or in so much pain it's difficult to get out of bed.
This belief sets women up for a lifetime of believing that they are at war with their bodies. But here's the thing it doesn't have to be that way, you don't have to go to war with your body to feel better.
As a reflexologist, I have worked with many women all at different times in their lives. Reflexology has helped them to balance their hormones, reduce their anxiety and feel better.
Feeling OFF is not normal if you are experiencing breakthrough bleeding or are concerned about your menstrual cycle then do consult your GP.
