What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is a type of holistic therapy that involves applying pressure on specific areas of the feet using hands. It is based on the principle that different organs, structures, and bodily systems have corresponding reflexes on the feet.

How does reflexology work?
In this blog, I will be discussing three theories that explain why reflexology works. One theory, dating back to the 19th century, suggests that reflexology works by stimulating the nervous system. This theory is supported by the fact that each foot has over 7,000 nerve endings. Therefore, a reflexology session can involve rich communication with a person's nervous system.
Another theory based on scientific research has shown that the vagus nerve, the body's major parasympathetic nerve, is directly affected during a reflexology session. This results in slowing down the heart rate, facilitating digestion, and promoting relaxation. It is no surprise that many clients report feeling a blissful sense of relaxation after a reflexology session.
An alternative theory comes from traditional Chinese medicine
That reflexology rests on the Chinese belief that qi (pronounced chee) is more easily known in the West as your vital energy flows through all of us. When a person becomes ill or stressed this qi becomes blocked.
This can cause an imbalance in the body that leads to illness. Reflexology aims to keep your qi flowing freely around the body thus keeping them balanced and free of illness.
Reflexologists work on similar principles to Chinese medicine and the idea that different body parts correspond with different pressure points on the body. Meaning that their touch sends energy flowing through a person’s body until it reaches the area that needs healing.
In conclusion
As a reflexologist myself I subscribe to both of the above theories, ultimately we may not be able to specifically label how reflexology works. However, there have been hundreds of scientific studies and many years of anecdotal evidence from reflexologists and clients who testify to the positive results achieved using Reflexology.
